ABOUT LICENSING &
TRADEMARK SERVICES

Binghamton University enjoys a rich history dating back to its founding in 1946. Since then, the University has gained recognition as a “premier public university” as well as for its Division I athletics program.

In developing this strong tradition, the University has become identifiable by several words and symbols that are known as trademarks. A trademark may be a word, symbol, design or combination of words and design, a catch phrase or even a unique sound, which identifies and distinguishes the goods or services of one party from those of another. Binghamton has several “protected marks” which arose from unique usage by the University. The tradition of the University, coupled with its large alumni and supporter base, has produced a considerable demand for products that display these Binghamton University-associated marks.

The Binghamton University Licensing and Trademark Services program was created to ensure that the public properly identifies and associates University marks on products bearing the University's logos, to protect the use of the University's name and symbols and to share the benefits derived from commercial use of its identifying marks. The program is also designed to establish a cooperative relationship with licensees to assist in the further development of a market for officially licensed products of Binghamton University by which both the University and its licensees will benefit.

Binghamton University’s Licensing and Trademark Services representative provides strategic direction for the program and insures that the program ultimately supports the branding and visibility goals of the University. This is accomplished by building brand equity, strengthening brand identity, attracting new customers, increasing awareness, strengthening relationships with consumers and expanding product distribution. For more information, contact Bev Switzer at 607-777-3500.

The University has partnered with Strategic Marketing Affiliates, Inc. (SMA) to assist in the management of the licensing program. SMA is responsible for the daily administrative activities generated by a licensing program, such as processing licensing applications, coordinating artwork approvals, collection of royalty payments and enforcement of trademark infractions.
